NVIDIA's OpenUSD standards are a way to create a foundation for 3D designers, artists, and developers to handle digital content creation, industrial, and simulation workloads. The standards also aim to achieve broad multi-app interoperability.
1
NVIDIA is part of the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD), which aims to extend and standardize the Universal Scene Description (USD) framework. USD is an open-source 3D scene description that's used for 3D content creation and interchange between tools. It's also known as OpenUSD. USD is an industry standard in robotics, manufacturing, architecture, visual effects, and more.
3
The first priority of the AOUSD is to develop a specification that describes the core functionality of OpenUSD. This will provide a recipe for tool builders to implement, encouraging adoption of the open standard across a wide range of use cases.
1
USD files contain data about 3D graphic elements such as the geometry and material appearance of models, animations, and virtual cameras, as well as scene layout.

Omniverse is a platform from NVIDIA that can be used to:
- Build USD applications
- Connect industry-leading 3D tools
- Accelerate projects and workflows
- Enhance, customize, and inspect applications 1
Some foundation applications built on Omniverse include: Code, Aireal, and SyncTwin.

Customers who use Omniverse include: Covariant, Sanctuary AI, Collaborative Robotics, Boston Dynamics, and Global automotive-Configurator Developer Ecosystem.
